It seems as though every single day the real-life reality TV spectacle of billionaire Donald Trump’s occupation of the White House adds a new, crazy dimension.
On her MSNBC show, host Joy Reid called President Trump out for the fact that his campaign just released a scare-mongering, anti-immigration commercial that claimed that Democrats will be “complicit in murders.”
The day after the federal government shutdown began, Trump’s campaign put out a commercial titled “Complicit” aimed at inflaming the public’s passion against undocumented immigrants and for Trump’s plan to build a border wall with Mexico. Stated the voice-over narration at the beginning of the commercial, “President Trump is right – build the wall, deport criminals, stop illegal immigration now. Democrats who stand in our way will be complicit in every murder committed by illegal immigrants.” MSNBC’s Reid addressed this new ad on her show AM Joy, asking her guest Evan Siegfried, a Republican consultant, “You have Republicans who are literally going right back to the playbook of brown scare — it was black scare. Is it wise, in your opinion as a millennial Republican strategist, for Republicans to run on brown people are rapists, murderers and killers and, therefore, do not belong in America?” The conservative, who has been critical of Trump, answered, “After Rep. Steve Scalise was shot in June, you and I had a heated debate about what is acceptable in tone. I said it’s really wrong for anybody to say one side wants to kill other people or is responsible for that. The same applies here.”
Evan added, “That ad is disgusting. It’s racist, it’s fear mongering and it’s a giant dog whistle. We’ll pay in the long term because the country is becoming more and more diverse. At the same time the president talks about how important illegal immigration and confronting it is. He isn’t confronting it.” Responded Joy, “Republicans used anti-blackness, fear of black men in order to take deeply ingrained hidden phobias inside of white voters that they may not have been comfortable voicing out loud. Lee Atwater said, ‘first you say N-word, N-word, N-word, but then you say we won’t lower taxes’ and what you’re really doing is race — race talk.” Fellow Republican consultant Shermichael Singleton concurred, saying about the commercial, “This isn’t a new phenomenon…What it shows is that the Republican Party, at least under President Trump, is out of touch with the change in demographics of the country.” Do you agree with them about this new, repulsively racist commercial?
