Ever since the campaign trail, Donald Trump has been a hardliner on immigration issues. Many feel that it was his support for a border wall between the United States and Mexico was the platform his voters elected him on.
Trump’s rhetoric has always included hate towards immigrants. Time and time again, President Trump has insinuated that all illegal immigrants from Mexico are criminals. What’s more, he also pardoned racist former Sheriff Joe Arpaio after he was found guilty of violating a court order to prevent him from racial profiling.
Even more recently, Trump received heaps of backlash when he referred to predominantly non-white nations such as El Salvador and Haiti as “shithole countries.” Many critics claimed Trump’s comments were based in racism as the president also stated his preference from immigrants from countries like Norway.
Needless to say, Trump’s worldview is the polar opposite of the compassionate one that was held by former President Obama. What’s more, Rep. Luis Gutiérrez (D-Ill.) argued over the weekend that Trump wants to end legal immigration to the U.S. once and for all.
The Democratic lawmaker argued, “They want to end legal immigration to the United States. They say, ‘Let’s build a wall to keep us safe.’ They say, ‘Let’s build a wall so that our workers don’t have to compete with illegals that come across the —’ but then they end legal immigration. They say, ‘the lottery system, let’s end it.’ That’s legal immigration to the United States.”
However, Republican Congressman Mark Meadows disagrees and argued, “We’re in the middle of a shutdown, but what we’re talking about is immigration. Is this an amnesty shutdown?” “There’s a deal that can be made, but we have to open the government first.” he insisted. Do you agree?
