Republican President Donald Trump responded to the fallout over his “shithole” comments about African nations and Haiti by, predictably, lying and claiming that he never said them.
This clearly did not fool former President Barack Obama and former Vice President Joe Biden, who both offered sharp responses to Trump’s remarks.
As he is wont to do, President Trump did not apologize for his unforced error but instead lied through his teeth and claimed that it was just “fake news.” Tweeted Trump after receiving blowback for his remarks, “The language used by me at the DACA meeting was tough, but this was not the language used. What was really tough was the outlandish proposal made – a big setback for DACA!” He followed that up with, “Never said anything derogatory about Haitians other than Haiti is, obviously, a very poor and troubled country. Never said ‘take them out.’ Made up by Dems. I have a wonderful relationship with Haitians. Probably should record future meetings – unfortunately, no trust!”
Neither Obama nor Biden bought Trump’s denials, however, and hit back at the former reality television star. Scolded former President Obama during an appearance on David Letterman’s new Netflix show, “One of the things that Michelle figured out, in some ways faster than I did—was part of your ability to lead the country doesn’t have to do with legislation, doesn’t have to do with regulations, it has to do with shaping attitudes, shaping culture, increasing awareness.” Former Vice President Biden, who is a possible challenger to Trump in the 2020 presidential election, was a great deal more direct. Wrote the former Delaware senator on his Twitter account, “It’s not how a president should speak. It’s not how a president should behave. Most of all, it’s not what a president should believe. We’re better than this.” Are you glad both Obama and Biden spoke out against Trump’s racist comments?
It’s not how a president should speak. It’s not how a president should behave. Most of all, it’s not what a president should believe. We’re better than this.
