Ever since the campaign trail, President Donald Trump has been hard on illegal immigration. He was elected by voters who want to build a wall between the United States and Mexico in order to keep illegal immigrants out.
Since Trump has been in the White House, he has also ended the DACA program, which helps young children who were brought to the U.S. illegally as kids obtain work permits so that they can remain in the country. Trump even told reporters at Camp David earlier this week that if there is no wall there will be no DACA program. However, he does think that Congress will come up with a suitable solution for the DACA recipients also known as Dreamers.
Furthermore, the President referred to immigrants from Haiti and African countries as coming from “shithole countries” during a Thursday Oval Office meeting on immigration, according to The Washington Post. “Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” Trump asked. Reports indicate that several GOP lawmakers were surprised by the President’s question and comments.
Sources went on to indicate that the President favored bringing in immigrants from countries like Norway. A few months ago, The New York Times reported that Trump asserted that Haitian immigrants “all have AIDS,” and that Nigerian immigrants would never return “to their huts” if we allowed them to enter the United States. Of course, The White House denied Trump ever made those heinous remarks but The Times stands by its reporting.
Trump has faced multiple obstacles trying to draw a hard line on immigration to please his voters. But how far is Trump willing to go? For example, will Trump allow the government to shut down if lawmakers don’t reallocate funds to build his precious wall?
