Obama References Hitler’s Rise During Anti-Trump Speech

Complacency is dangerous. If the American voter becomes accustomed to the unethical actions of President Trump, America has some bleak days in its future. In fact, former President Obama warned Americans about that same complacency during a recent speech where the 44th president issued a stark warning against growing nativism in the U.S. and throughout the world. Obama told the forum’s audience during a question and answer session that the danger at hand was “grow(ing) complacent,” according to The Hill.

He continued: “We have to tend to this garden of democracy or else things could fall apart quickly. That’s what happened in Germany in the 1930s which, despite the democracy of the Weimar Republic and centuries of high-level cultural and scientific achievements, Adolph Hitler rose to dominate. Sixty million people died. … So, you’ve got to pay attention. And vote.”

While Obama did not mention Trump’s name directly, it is clear he was referring to the dark path of divisive rhetoric and tribalist mentality America is headed down and the Trump administration is in charge.  Critics of Trump say his rhetoric has fueled nationalist sentiment in the U.S. and anti-Muslim sentiment.

Former President Bill Clinton also recently spoke out against the tribalism and the ‘you’re either with us or against us’ mentality that Trump’s divisive rhetoric seems to promote. America was built on compromise but many lawmaker and experts agree that has been lost by the desire to win and be right. Unfortunately, the average voter is the one who bears the brunt of having lawmakers who refuse to do their job and choose progress over pettiness. A lot has changed since Obama left office. But what will the future of America be like if we continue down this dark path? Will the American voters heed Obama’s warning or will Trump be the updated version of Adold Hitler?
