America’s lawmakers stood in shock last week when a man, who was targeting Republicans, opened fire at baseball stadium where several member of the GOP were practicing. The shooter severely injured Majority Whip Steve Scalise and wounded several others. Since the shooting, the both the Republicans and Democrats have come together in solidarity for their colleague.
However, today the hospital announced that Scalise is showing ‘signs of improvement’ after additional surgery. According to POLITICO, reports claims that Scalise is showing “signs of improvement” and is “speaking with his loved ones,” said MedStar Washington Hospital Center on Saturday.
MedStar Hospital also amended the Congressman’s condition from critical to serious. The hospitals statement continued, “Congressman Steve Scalise is in serious condition. He underwent another surgery today, but continues to show signs of improvement. He is more responsive, and is speaking with his loved ones. The Scalise family greatly appreciates the outpouring of thoughts and prayers.”
On Friday, the news was far more bleak. In fact, the director of trauma at MedStar, Dr. Jack Sava, told the media that Scalise was in “imminent risk of death.” Sava continued to explained that the “risk of death right now is substantially lower than when he came in. The majority whip will remain in the hospital for a conservable amount of time.”
The bullet that caused the damage to Scalise entered through the Congressman’s hip. While this incident had definitely brought the political party’s closer together, it has also revamped the old issue of gun control. The Democrats have long advocated for tougher gun laws and restrictions. Perhaps this incident may be the very thing that triggers new legislation. However, Scalise seems to be improving and that is the important thing. Do you think Scalise will make a statement about tougher gun laws after his recovery?
