President Donald Trump is facing the first open dissent from Republican lawmakers over his attempt to scrap the party’s longstanding free-trade policy, with two GOP senators announcing Wednesday they will vote against the confirmation of Mr. Trump’s trade representative.
It’s worth taking a look at Senator John McCain and Trump’s relationship over the past several months in order to more clearly understand why McCain is so willing to fight back against Trump; it’s no secret Senator John McCain and Trump have no love lost-especially after Trump felt it necessary to smear McCain’s military service after a heated dispute between the two back in 2016. With this in mind, it may be easier to understand why McCain is so willing to stand up to Trump from the same side of the aisle. Whether it be the firing of FBI Director Comey or Trump’s appointment of Robert Lighthizer to the USTA despite his controversial stance on NFTA.
“Republican U.S. Senators John McCain and Ben Sasse said on Wednesday they would vote against President Donald Trump’s nominee for U.S. trade representative, Robert Lighthizer, because of his opposition to the North American Free Trade Agreement.
“Unfortunately, your confirmation process has failed to reassure us that you understand the North American Free Trade Agreement’s (NAFTA) positive economic benefits to our respective States and the nation as a whole,” McCain and Sasse said in a letter to Lighthizer.”
